Allama Iqbal Open University is the largest university in Asia, where many students are getting a quality education. AIOU Government University in Pakistan was established in 1974. It was founded under Act XXXIX by the Pakistani Parliament in May 1974. The main campus of AIOU is in Islamabad, with about fifty-four campuses in Pakistan. It’s a multi-diverse university providing Education from primary to master’s level.

First, it was named People’s Open University, then Allama Iqbal Open University in 1977.

It offers various educational certificates from the second level to the master’s and PhD levels.

History of Allama Iqbal Open University

The Allama Iqbal Open University was organized in May 1974 in Islamabad. The key objective behind the establishment of the university was to provide equal educational opportunities to the general people who could not leave their jobs or homes for any reason. So, AIOU has been following its objective of providing educational opportunities since its establishment.

The idea behind the establishment of AIOU

The idea of an Open University came from UK Prime Minister Harold Wilson, who gave the idea of learning from a distance. According to him, there should be equal opportunities for learning for those who cannot leave their job and home for some reason. 

So, in 1969, the first UK Open University was established. So, from establishing the Open University in the UK, the concept of Open University became famous worldwide. There are more than 60 Open universities in the world. AIOU is also one of the Open universities that provide Education to those who cannot join the university regularly.
